Days 274-365: From Zechariah to King Jesus

"And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he [Jesus] explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself."
—LUKE 24:27

"Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him."
—HEBREWS 5:8-9

Our final steps in Scripture carry us through the "New Testament," where we finally get to witness the shining source all the shadows depicted, the destination to which all the signposts pointed, and the crescendo to which all the prophetic sounds built. "And she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them" (Luke 2:7). The narrative of the Messiah's birth into our world might sound a little anticlimactic, but God was meeting us where we are. Although he is a king, Jesus was born to a low-income family in Roman-occupied Is-rael, where he drank from common wells and walked dirt streets. As Hebrews 2:11b put simply yet profoundly, "Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers." This section tells the incomparably beautiful story of how the Son of God became like us—so that we can become sons and daughters of God, so that he can make his home here in us on earth, and so that we can be at home with him in heaven for eternity.
