SERVE: Outreach

Love serving locally or globally? Have a heart for the vulnerable and lost? Then serving in Cornerstone’s Outreach Ministries might be a great fit for you!

Please take a look at our current needs below and indicate your area(s) of interest.  A ministry lead will contact you within a couple of weeks.

A current (within the past 2 years) background check is required for many of these roles working in partner schools.

DESCRIPTION OF CURRENT NEEDS
(Some of these are school-year related, like Hand2Hand and Kids Hope, so opportunities to train could take place in the spring, to prepare for next school year.)

Kids Hope USA Mentor: This role builds a relationship with a student by consistently meeting with one student for one hour a week, at the school, during the school year. Often times students don't have a trusted adult who shows up for them consistently in their lives, to encourage them to become all they are capable to be. (You can travel and miss a date or two and still be a good mentor.)

Kids Hope Prayer Partner: Prayer Partners will commit to pray for the mentor/mentee meeting each week. Prayer can happen from anywhere. Prayer partners do not have to be on-site at the school.

Hand2Hand Set Up Team: Be one of 8-12 people on this team! This role is responsible for making sure the food is ready to pack on pack night. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 1) Count and set up food items on tables for each school, and each week, to be ready for packing. 2) Pull food from the pantry to the packing space. 3) Set tote bins in place. 4) Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds. 5) Complete the Set Up Checklist. 6) Communicate to the Pack Night Captain if there were any food inventory discrepancies

H2H Kit Packing Coordinator: This role is responsible for assembling the required amount of snack/breakfast kits.  Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 1) Setting up tables. 2) Getting & setting up food items. 3) Assembling Kits per instructions given by Overall Food Leader or Overall Team Leader. 4) Counting and labeling how many kits are in each "container" (insta-crate/box). 5) Labeling the "Use By Date" on the container, (listing what the first expiration date is of the items in the kit). 6) Communicating with the Overall Food Leader and Overall Team Leader about what was accomplished and what wasn't, and where completed kits were stored.

Hand2Hand Packer: This role is part of a 14 person team that packs snack kits, breakfast kits and lunch/dinner items into a full bag for a child to take home on the weekends. Each bag will have at least 10 food items. This role is typically every other Wednesday evening 6pm at South Wyoming.

Hand2Hand Delivery Route Driver/Co-Pilot   Drive and/or ride along in the box truck, usually Thursday mornings during the school year, to load/unload totes of packed food to the 5 schools.

Hand2Hand Distribution: This role ensures bag of food gets to the student's locker/teacher. You would be part of one of our schools' teams and could pick the school closest to you. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 1) Getting the bags of food (already delivered to the school) to the right locker/teacher's classroom. 2) Possibly stacking empty tote bins. 3) Possibly returning empty tote bins to the Hand2Hand Pantry. 4) Taking direction and communicating directly with the appropriate School Coordinator. 5) Clearing a background check.

Family Promise Hospitality Host:  This role is on-site from 3:00pm-8:00pm to welcome families as they arrive and to assist the Cornerstone Family Promise Week Coordinator,  including but not limited to driving somewhere to run an errand, if needed. You'll meet the families, participate in dinner & kids activities, and meet the Overnight Hosts. We do ask that all First Time Hospitality Hosts plan to attend the "Discover Family Promise Week" on the first Sunday of our week from 12:30pm-1:30pm. Discover Family Promise Week will equip you to serve with confidence!

Family Promise Overnight Host:  Arrive at 8:00 PM to spend the night at church in a private room, and help guests as necessary. Usually the easiest job of the week - you are mostly sleeping! You must bring your own bedding (including pillows, twin sheets and blanket or a sleeping bag). A current background check is required.  If we don't have a current background check on file for you, you will receive an email from a Cornerstone Staff Person that will will include a link to a background check.  It only takes a couple of minutes to fill out the electronic form, so please do it quickly.  This email will come prior to your serving date

Family Promise Week: Be part of the team to host families facing homelessness, at our 84th Street location, one week at a time, up to 4 times per year. See specific details in the sign-up form.

West Michigan Friendship Center Provide Dinner for 40+ people. Friday evenings at the Center, 6pm-8:30pm. You do not need to provide tableware or drinks. Please no pork, marshmallows, or hot dogs; a vegetarian option is great for those who only eat halal meat.

Streams "Thrive" Mentor: Typically Wednesday evenings. Training provided by Streams. Mentors have a meal and meet with a Thrive Leader (someone working to get out of generational poverty) at least twice a week to provide friendship, encouragement and learn about the leader's life.

Reading Helper @ Campus Elementary:
No prior tutoring or teaching experience is required.  The program uses the Primary Phonic series books that are very good and easy to use.  The main focus is encouragement and giving students a chance to practice reading. This is a flexible ministry. The second grade program operates from 8:50 to 10:50.  The program that focuses on 4th and 5th grade students runs from 11-12 noon and 1 to 2pm.  You can sign up for any combination of times that work for you.
